Tips to Preventing Unnecessary Water Damage on Your Asphalt Paving

Asphalt laying has experienced a steady rise in popularity among Aussie homeowners. Previously associated with commercial paving, more and more people are now opting for asphalt paving for their driveways instead of concrete due to the array of benefits that it accords a property. However, even with the enhanced durability that asphalt offers, it does not mean that it is invulnerable to damage. And one of the elements that can pose a risk to the integrity of your asphalt paving is continual exposure to water. The following piece lists a few handy tips that you can employ to prevent unnecessary water damage on your asphalt paving.

A sealcoating schedule

A primary maintenance measure that is critical to the longevity of your asphalt paving is routinely having its surface sealcoated. However, sealcoating does not only provide the paving with a protective barrier against moisture. The sealcoating also functions to prevent premature damage from direct ultraviolet exposure form the scorching Australian sun. Furthermore, having the paving sealcoated will also prevent vehicular fluid leaks from staining the asphalt and subsequently diminishing its appeal. When you have a strict schedule for sealcoating the paving, you can be assured that the asphalt will stay pristine for the long term.

Efficient drainage systems

Another crucial measure to take in an attempt to prolong the lifespan of your asphalt paving is installing efficient drainage systems to keep water from pooling on the surface. While some homeowners will take the time to ensure that their guttering is in good enough condition to direct precipitation away from their primary structure, a good number will forget about keeping water away from their paving too. Thus, while your foundation and exterior walls are kept in pristine condition, the unwanted water ends up flowing to the paving and forms puddles on the surface. During the rainy season, this oversight can cause your asphalt paving to crack and eventually succumb to severe degradation. Therefore, it is also essential to have the asphalt laid on an incline and to have trenches on either side to facilitate the flow of water away from the surface.

Immediate filling of cracks

Even with meticulous care, oxidation is bound to affect your asphalt paving. The more oxidation it undergoes, the more brittle that the paving becomes. As a result, the asphalt becomes susceptible to cracks, especially when it is exposed to the heavy weight of your vehicle. However, these cracks do not have to translate into the need for a driveway replacement. To extend the lifespan of the asphalt, you should ensure that all cracks are filled as soon as they manifest, as this will keep them from expanding.
