Plumbing Upgrade: Three Material Options for Drain Piping

The drain piping network is an indispensable element in the residential plumbing system. Therefore, you should perform regular assessments and commission inspection by a plumber. This will allow you to identify problems that could compromise the function of the entire plumbing. Generally, common drain piping problem can be resolved through repair of leaks and removal of clogs. However, if you have been experiencing recurring problems, you should consider upgrading and replacing the entire drainage network. Here are the primary types of modern drainage and waste piping to consider for your home.

PVC Drain Pipes

The polyvinyl chloride material is a popular choice in the modern plumbing market. The primary benefit of choosing PVC drain piping over alternatives is the low price of purchase. This means that you can afford to upgrade most of your home's network, even if you have a restricted budget. PVC is a strong material which does not sustain damage easily from mechanical impact or pressure. Moreover, it can withstand the corrosive nature of wastewater, detergents, and sewage. On the other hand, this type of plastic is not ideal for handling high temperature, so hot water from the kitchen and bathrooms can cause accelerated deterioration.

ABS Drain Pipes

ABS is a common plastic which is an ideal alternative to PVC in drainage and sewer system applications. Generally, this product is black in colour, and its structure is rigid and strong. The material can handle high impact without breakage, even in low temperature. Therefore, this is a good choice if you are concerned about cold weather and busted pipes. Generally, ABS can be used effectively from -20⁰C to about 80⁰C without deformation. These properties make these types of pipes potentially more durable than the PVC. Unfortunately, ABS does not react favourably to solar radiation, and continued exposure will weaken the structure. Therefore, this is not a good choice if some parts of your pipes are outdoors.

Copper Pipes

The popularity of copper piping in drainage networks has declined significantly, particularly in residential application. This can be attributed to the high cost attached to the metal compared to the modern plastic option. However, copper is unrivalled in terms of strength, resilience and durability. Unlike most metals, copper is not vulnerable to rust and corrosion. Moreover, the material is not affected extensively by changes in wastewater temperature or even mechanical impact. On the other hand, installation of this type of drainage network is difficult, so the labour cost of the plumbing upgrade can be quite high.
